Miami 305. The championship winning team you've probably never heard of but put up one of the best championship moments in sports history. Led by Michael Beasley, Lance Stephenson, and Mario Chalmers, Miami 305 lifted the Big 3 championship trophy on Sunday.
It had everything a basketball fan could want. It had a game-winning shot, had a 11 point lead blown and recovered, almost had a fight, and both teams were totally locked in treating it like a true championship game. Lance Stephenson was dancing like you've never seen him anyone do in a competitive basketball game. He kept taking these crazy jab steps, then nutmegs the defender, and air balls a 3. Absolutely classic Lance. Meanwhile Mike Beasley taking no prisoners out there. Doing what he always does the guy just a walking bucket he can score pretty much at ease and then the big three league with space and those defenders. He just gets to a spot and it's auto. As a kid I wanted D Rose to win the NCAA championship and I always hated Chalmers cause he had that shot to send it to overtime and end up winning that game in the final. This time, the villain lived long enough to become the hero and for my team hit the game-winning shot in the corner. Mike Beasley passing the ball to Chalmers in the corner was the equivalent to Kobe passing the ball to Ron Artest for the three in game 7 of the finals vs the Celtics. The same play where Ron went on to have the classic post game press conference saying "Kobe passed me the ball!!" They were the best team all season long, they had the best roster, they had the best players, especially when Joe Johnson got hurt then they had the two best players, they just needed to execute.
The game started out tight early on with Chicago able to maintain a little lead for most of the first half. George Gervin used his Bring the Fire at the right times and his guys stepped up for that. Late in the first and early in the 2nd half Miami 305 took a double digit lead from Beasley and Stephenson mainly. It had me sitting back counting my money thinking finally my team will win a championship. Then next thing you know Lance is doing the craziest dance you've ever seen on a basketball court. For the most part the guys were totally locked in and competing, which made it so entertaining, but the 5 seconds of Lance clowning was pure comedy. That actually changed the game a bit. Beasley went over and hugged him and said not again, in different words. But Chicago got right back in it, and actually took a 46-43 lead. I thought, first the pacers, then Fail Harder, then Caitlin gets hurt, now Lance chokes, Indy is Cursed!! But Chicago had a chance to win the game with a 4 pointer and their best player Nore goes for a running 4 pointer throw up. Montrezl Harrell was pissed, rightfully so, but they went at it for a bit. They were in shambles after that. Even got away with calling a timeout they didn't have at the end of the game. But down 48-49, and having to win by 1 point, Michael Beasley decided to pass the ball out to Chalmers for the open 3. Chalmers hardly ever played, but with a 3 being able to win the game, they got him in the game and he delivered. Just like D Rose vs Memphis in the NCAA championship game.
It's sick being able to watch some of my favorite hoopers growing up, be coached by some of the legendary hoopers of the game I didn't get to see. Chalmers went Villain to Hero, Lance got a ring for the city of Indianapolis, and Michael Beasley is just the purest hooper how can you not root for him. And an underrated weapon on NBA 2k16. All while playing for George Gervin. "Somebody gon dribble the ball, might as well be me" - Mike Beasley gotta be one of the coldest quotes ever. Right next to "Indy but it feels like Miami" Miami 305 said "INDY THIS IS FOR YOUUU".
