It's that time of year again. Time for your sleep schedule to be wrecked for the next month while Aussie tennis starts at 7pm ET and is on still when you wake up for school in the next morning. As I was beginning this phase I tuned into Jack Pinnington Jones vs Gilles Arnaud Bailly (TCU vs Texas). The match was in a rain delay so all I could do was look at the court and noticed them in a Challenger in Canberra The Australian Open is often referred to as the happy slam overall because Australia as a nation takes so much pride in their tennis, and it's Australia, you can't be mad. But one thing that shows them going above and beyond is that they are the only Grand Slam where every warm up tournament has the same surface as the Grand Slam they are warming up for. And not just the United Cup and Brisbane International, but also the Challenger tournaments too.
I was trying to tune into Pinnington Jones and Pierre Yves Bailly (TCU vs Texas) match last night and noticed even the challengers have the same surface.

Obviously for Roland Garros and Wimbledon the surfaces are natural but there's a huge difference in the clay in Rome, Madrid, and Roland Garros. And of course with Grass the surfaces won't be the same but the Wimbledon courts bounce so unreal when new they're almost hard courts. At one of the warm up tournaments in England it's not even close to as nice of a feeling on your feet. And the surfaces are also all different for the tournaments leading up to the US Open. Of course some are the same but Cincinnati is known to be one of the fastest courts on tour and that's 2 weeks before the US Open starts.
Tennis Australia could easily have the tournaments be all independent but they go out of their way to make sure the surfaces are all the same so everybody is used to it come AO time. It's the small things sometimes. It's an unreal luxury and they overall as a country are so happy to have the professional tennis players there for the month.
